So you can throw a cylinder? So you can throw a bowl? In this 9 week intensive, take your basic forms to the next level with several alteration methods. Ryder will start with some of the standard techniques – splitting and scalloping the rim, throwing pieces with square and triangular cross-section, adding a spiral to a form, rib alteration, and the always fun expansion technique. We will work up to testing out Ryder’s ‘designed alterations’ – patterns created by pressing the clay out from the inside, applying pressure to the outside with a rib, and carving for precise shapes. This is how Ryder achieves his ‘bubble’ style altered forms, as well as swirling patterns (see pictures). For this method, even-walled, well-centered, vertical forms work best (bottles/vases), so comfort with throwing a 6 inch + cylinder will give you the greatest opportunity to explore in this class.
*All classes include 25 pounds of clay, and the glazing and firing of those 25#, a $40 value. If you can help offset this cost please add “Class Clay – Pay What You Can” to your order.
Classes also include ample access to the studio during posted open studio hours. Ceramics is an art form that benefits from practice and social time outside of class time.
Refunds will not be given within one week of the beginning of class. A $25 processing fee will be retained from any refund. If a class must be cancelled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be given.
