This advanced ceramics course explores alternative approaches to wheel throwing and hand-building, with a focus on combining construction methods to create dynamic, cohesive forms. Students will experiment with altered thrown forms, sculptural hand-building techniques, and hybrid construction strategies that move beyond traditional functional processes. The course will also introduce advanced surface decoration techniques through colored clay, emphasizing color as an integrated structural element rather than surface decoration alone.

Simple Week-by-Week Outline

Week 1: Introduce wheel throwing and altering forms
Week 2: Altering thrown forms continued — cutting, darting, reshaping, and recombining
Week 3: Alternative hand-building — soft slab construction, sculptural coils
Week 4: Demo combining wheel and hand-building into cohesive hybrid forms
Week 5: Advanced surface techniques — carving, slip, etc.
Week 6: Introduction to colored clay — mixing mason stains, testing, logistics
Week 7: Colored clay construction — layering colored clay, integrating with thrown forms
Week 8: Work week
Week 9: Glazing
Week 10: Final week discussions / Finishing work

*All classes include 25 pounds of clay, and the glazing and firing of those 25#, though we encourage you to pay what you can for this material, as costs continue to rise. You will be provided an option on checkout to pay for your clay. Additional clay may be purchased if needed.

Classes also include ample access to the studio during posted open studio hours. Ceramics is an art form that benefits from practice and social time outside of class time.

Refunds will not be given within one week of the beginning of class. A $25 processing fee will be retained from any refund. If a class must be cancelled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be given.
