Elizabeth Shank

Elizabeth Shank first started making wheel-thrown ceramics during her last two years of graduate school in 2002. She then took a two-decade (!) break to focus on her scientific career and family before restarting ceramics in the summer of 2024 at the Meetinghouse Clay Center. As a scientist whose work is largely intellectual and involves years-long projects, she is drawn to the immediate and tangible nature of clay as well as the opportunity to be more intuitive and artistic than her day job allows. Although all of her sgraffito carvings are created freehand, she still strives for precision and beauty in the bowls and other functional forms she creates.
