Intro to Glaze Making and Testing
Sarah Caruso
10 Wednesdays, 9:30-12:30
January 7-March 11
$470, $445 with Early Bird Pricing before November 15
This class does not include a bag of clay. Glaze ingredients are included in the cost of the class, and we will use community clay for our test tiles.
You’ve been asking, so here we go! What the heck is a glaze and how are they made? When people ask, I answer, “if you can make a cake, you can make a glaze. It’s just weighing and wetting ingredients.” But there is more to it than that, and jumping in, both to just making a recipe and to tweaking a recipe, can be super intimidating! In this class over the ten weeks we will each pick a recipe we like and make it, create test tiles that are relevant to our personal work, tweak a Meetinghouse glaze to see how changing percentages of ingredients changes a glaze, and generally get more comfortable with the endless possibilities in our “cookbooks”. We may even luck out on creating a new glaze to add to The Meetinghouse repertoire!
Each participant will need:
A respirator or n95 mask
Kitchen scale that can measure in grams (we have 2 to share, so you don’t necessarily need to purchase one, but it will make the class go smoother if you have one to bring in. This is one I like, waterproof and rechargeable. )
3 or 4 empty large mouth containers that hold at least 1 quart (those fancy rice or nut containers from BJ’s are good, Talenti containers are too small.
*Classes also include ample access to the studio during posted open studio hours. Ceramics is an art form that benefits from practice and social time outside of class time.
*Refunds will not be given within one week of the beginning of class. A $25 processing fee will be retained from any refund. If a class must be cancelled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be given.
