In this one-day three-hour hands-on workshop, participants will decorate bisque-fired pottery pieces using a modified Majolica technique. Participants have the option of bringing up to three of their own cone 6 bisque-fired pieces to paint, or they can purchase already fired plates and/or bowls online through the workshop section of this website. Previous pottery experience is not required to take this workshop.
Traditional Majolica is an Italian tin-glazed pottery technique dating back to the Renaissance. Bisque-fired pottery is decorated with bright colors on a white background. This workshop will use a modified Majolica technique employing watercolor effects. Underglazes are mixed with water and painted on bisque fired pieces to which white glaze has previously been applied. The underglazes are applied to the pottery as if painting a watercolor painting on paper. The intentional or unintentional bleeding of the colors is what gives this technique its beauty.
If you are bringing your own pottery pieces, plates and shallow bowls with smooth surfaces are best suited for this technique. Underglazes and brushes will be provided; however, you are welcome to bring your own. Pieces will be fired on-site, and participants will be notified when they are ready for pickup.
Please come with ideas or sketches for your paintings!
Teacher Biography:
Eve Bankert has been making pottery for over 40 years. Eve frequents local artisan’s fairs and showcases her work in select businesses. She loves to experiment with glazes and different techniques and styles.
Utilizing pottery as a canvas, Eve creates watercolor paintings on her bisque-fired pottery. She employs a modified Majolica technique to produce fluidity and transparency of the applied underglazes. Layering of the underglazes gives additional depth and definition. Inspired by nature and particularly botanicals, pieces are designed to marry two artforms into one bringing an additional dimension to each piece.
